femme-de-lettres:

Large (Clark Art Museum)

Fall, painted in 1877, forms the third in Alfred Stevens’ allegorical series of the seasons.

As with the others, Fall wears fashionable contemporary clothes—unusual and striking in an allegorical work.

She is more thoughtful—her attitude and garb more muted—than the previous two. A sparrow watches on from the bench behind her.
